Today in Crypto - Digital Money Stops Being Only Dollars

A Korean bank adopts Ripple Payments, China widens the digital yuan to 30 banks, and Circle's EURC passes 400 million euros.

The digital dollar has had a very good year, and Tuesday was a reminder that it is not the only digital money being built. A regional Korean bank switched on around-the-clock cross-border settlement for its exporters, China widened its state digital currency to thirty banks, Europe’s euro token crossed 400 million, and Solana took a zero off the cost of existing onchain.

  • Jeonbuk Bank is the first Korean regional lender to run cross-border transfers on Ripple Payments.
  • Eight more banks joined China’s e-CNY network, lifting the operator count from 10 in 2022 to 30 today.
  • Circle’s euro stablecoin passed 400 million in circulation, more than double where it stood at the end of 2024.
  • Storage rent on Solana fell 90%, cutting a token account’s deposit from about 16 cents to under 2.

Cheaper to use, issued in more currencies, plugged into more banks. The money layer is starting to look less like one product and more like a set of choices.

Jeonbuk Bank, founded in 1969 and the dominant lender in South Korea’s Jeonbuk province, became the first regional bank in the country to deploy Ripple Payments for cross-border transfers. The service goes to business customers including importers, exporters, IT startups and online content creators.

Ripple’s offering settles in seconds to minutes and runs around the clock, against the days a traditional SWIFT transfer can take. Ripple did not confirm to CoinDesk whether this deployment settles in XRP or in its RLUSD stablecoin. It is Ripple’s third Korean partnership this year, and it landed on a day XRP fell to 98 cents, its lowest since November 2024.

Zypto take: The interesting customer here is not the bank, it is the online content creator waiting to be paid from another country. Multi-day settlement is a quiet tax on small operators, and it is the first thing this technology removes.

That is the practical case for crypto payments in business, and what Zypto Pay gives merchants handling cross-border flows, with settlement in fiat or crypto and 0% merchant-side processing fees.

China widens its digital yuan to thirty operating banks

The People’s Bank of China added eight institutions to the e-CNY operator network, among them Ping An Bank, Bank of Shanghai, Bank of Hangzhou and Guangxi Beibu Gulf Bank, taking the total to 30. Twelve city commercial banks joined in April 2026; before this year only 10 banks had been authorized, the last of those back in 2022.

A researcher quoted by Cointelegraph said the new operators help fill service gaps for regional small and medium-sized businesses and for cross-border trade. The central bank began researching digital currency in 2014 and started pilots in late 2019, since extending e-CNY into merchant payments, public utilities and government services.

Zypto take: More operators means the digital yuan reaches more people faster. It remains money a central bank issues and holds on the terms it sets, which is the arrangement crypto was built to route around.

Worth knowing which is which. Zypto App keeps keys on your own device across 20+ blockchains, and a base asset like Bitcoin has no company behind it and no freeze switch at all.

Circle’s euro stablecoin passes 400 million

EURC, Circle’s euro-denominated token, passed 400 million euros in circulation, more than double the roughly 80 million it held at the end of 2024. It runs across five networks: Ethereum, Avalanche, Stellar, Solana and Base.

Circle issues EURC as an electronic money token under MiCA through its French-licensed entity, approved in July 2024. Total euro stablecoin supply reached around 650 million by June 2026. That is still slight against roughly 300 billion dollars in dollar-pegged tokens, but euro tokens are now the second-largest fiat stablecoin segment.

Zypto take: Euro stablecoins are a rounding error next to the dollar ones, which is exactly why the growth rate is the number worth watching. Doubling in eighteen months is what a currency looks like when it stops being an experiment.

Someone who earns and spends in euros should not have to hold a synthetic dollar to use money onchain. More stablecoins in more currencies is how this becomes genuinely global rather than genuinely American.

Solana cuts the cost of existing onchain by ninety percent

Solana’s Agave 4.2 began activating in the week of August 17, cutting onchain storage rent by 90% by dropping the lamports-per-byte constant from 6,960 to 696. A standard SPL token account’s rent-exempt deposit falls from roughly 16 cents to about 1.6 cents.

Maximum transaction size rises from 1,232 bytes to 4,096, roughly 3.3 times, letting ZK proofs, large multisigs and onchain BLS signature schemes run in a single transaction instead of through workarounds. A separate proposal targets 200 millisecond slots in four 50 millisecond steps, with safeguards that halt the progression if block skip rates climb too far.

Zypto take: Cost is the quiet determinant of what actually gets built. When creating an account costs less than two cents, a whole class of applications stops being uneconomic and starts being obvious.

Solana is one of the 20+ blockchains the Zypto multichain wallet covers, with swaps running in-app across 1,000,000+ crosschain routes. Download Zypto App.

Key Takeaways

  • Digital money is becoming plural. Different issuers, different currencies and different custody models are all shipping at once.
  • Cross-border settlement is where the advantage shows up first, and it reaches small operators before it reaches large ones.
  • A state digital currency and a self-custodied wallet are not rival answers to one question. Knowing which you want is the useful part.
  • Falling costs decide what gets built next, and a token account on Solana now costs less than two cents to open.
  • The dollar still dominates onchain money by an enormous margin. The interesting growth is happening at the edges.
