What is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin (BTC) is the original cryptocurrency and the first peer-to-peer digital money that works without a central bank or payment processor. Launched in January 2009 by the pseudonymous Satoshi Nakamoto, it runs on its own blockchain, the Bitcoin network, where a worldwide set of computers records and verifies every transaction in a shared public ledger.

Bitcoin uses a proof-of-work consensus mechanism, in which miners spend computing power to add new blocks and confirm payments. New BTC enters circulation as a block reward that halves roughly every four years, and the protocol caps the total supply at 21 million coins. That fixed issuance is a core reason BTC is often described as a store of value rather than only a means of payment.

As the largest cryptocurrency by market value, Bitcoin is also widely held as a long-term asset and used to send value across borders. You can follow the live Bitcoin price and keep your own BTC in a self-custody wallet, where the private keys stay in your hands.

How is Bitcoin priced?

Bitcoin trades 24 hours a day, and its price comes from supply and demand across many exchanges at once. The number above is a live, volume-weighted average of those markets. Because it trades continuously and worldwide, the price can move sharply within a single day. Past performance is no guarantee of future results, and nothing here is financial advice.

Where can I hold Bitcoin?

You can hold Bitcoin in any non-custodial wallet, which means you control the private keys rather than trusting an exchange. Zypto App is a non-custodial multichain wallet where you can hold BTC, swap it into 24,000+ assets, and use it for real-world spending, paying bills, buying gift cards, and topping up phones.
