What is BNB?
BNB is the native token of BNB Chain, a public blockchain ecosystem that grew out of the Binance exchange. The token first appeared in 2017 as an ERC-20 issued on Ethereum during a token sale, then moved to its own chain when the network launched in 2019. Today BNB Chain centers on BNB Smart Chain, an EVM-compatible execution layer, alongside opBNB, a layer-2 built with the OP Stack, and BNB Greenfield for decentralized data storage.
BNB pays the transaction fees that keep the network running, and holders can stake it to help secure the chain and earn rewards. It also carries voting weight in on-chain governance, where holders submit and decide proposals. The earlier BNB Beacon Chain, which once handled staking and governance, has now been sunset and its functions folded into BNB Smart Chain.
As one of the larger blockchain ecosystems by activity, BNB Chain hosts a wide range of decentralized applications, from trading to gaming. You can follow the BNB price here and hold BNB yourself in a self-custody wallet, where the keys stay with you.
