What is XRP?
XRP is the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), an open-source blockchain built for payments and settlement that went live in 2012. The ledger is designed to move value across currencies and borders, settling transactions in seconds for a fraction of a cent, and it includes a decentralized exchange built directly into the protocol.
Rather than proof of work or proof of stake, the XRP Ledger uses its own consensus protocol, in which a set of independent validators agree on the order and validity of transactions. There is no mining and no staking. XRP itself is often used as a bridge asset, letting one currency be exchanged for another quickly during cross-border payments, and it pays the small fees that the network charges to process transactions.
