What is Avalanche?
AVAX is the native token of Avalanche, a layer-1 smart-contract platform that launched in 2020, built by Ava Labs. The network is known for fast finality, settling transactions in roughly a second through its own Snow-family consensus. Avalanche is organized around three built-in chains: the C-Chain runs an Ethereum Virtual Machine for smart contracts, the X-Chain handles asset creation and transfers, and the P-Chain coordinates validators and the wider network.
AVAX pays the fees for activity across these chains and is staked by validators who secure the network in return for rewards. It also has a fixed maximum supply, and a portion of every fee is permanently removed from circulation. Beyond the primary chains, Avalanche lets teams launch their own sovereign blockchains, now called Avalanche L1s, which use AVAX in their setup.
