What is NEAR?
NEAR Protocol is a layer-1 blockchain built for scalability and ease of use, with its mainnet launched in 2020 by co-founders Illia Polosukhin and Alexander Skidanov. It uses human-readable account names instead of long hexadecimal addresses, which makes wallets and apps more approachable for newcomers.
NEAR runs on proof of stake and scales through a sharding design called Nightshade, which splits the work of processing transactions across parallel shards so the network can handle high throughput while keeping fees low. Later upgrades added stateless validation, lowering the hardware needed to run a validator. A portion of every transaction fee is burned, removing those tokens from circulation over time.
NEAR is the native token of the NEAR blockchain. It is used to pay gas fees, to stake with validators that secure the network, and to take part in on-chain governance. You can track the NEAR price and hold the token in a self-custody wallet, keeping full control of your funds.
