What is Litecoin?
Litecoin is a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency released in October 2011 by Charlie Lee, a former Google engineer. It is one of the oldest Bitcoin forks and is often described as digital silver to Bitcoin's gold, since it shares much of Bitcoin's design while aiming for faster, cheaper everyday payments.
The Litecoin network runs on proof of work using the scrypt hashing algorithm rather than Bitcoin's SHA-256. Blocks are produced roughly every 2.5 minutes, about four times faster than Bitcoin, so transactions confirm more quickly. Supply is capped at 84 million LTC, four times Bitcoin's 21 million limit, and the block reward halves on a fixed schedule. In 2022 Litecoin added the MimbleWimble Extension Blocks upgrade, which lets users send optional confidential transactions that hide the amount.
LTC is the native coin of the Litecoin blockchain and is used to pay network fees and settle payments between wallets. You can follow the Litecoin price and hold LTC in a self-custody wallet, with the private keys under your own control.
