Today in Crypto - XRP Ledger Is One Vote From Batching

XRP Ledger is one validator from batched transactions, Tonkeeper reopens as a seven-chain wallet, UK eyes tokenized gold.

Three parts of the self-custody stack moved on the same morning. A payments chain is one validator short of letting eight transactions succeed or fail as a unit, the largest wallet in the TON ecosystem reopened across seven networks, and two regulators spent the day writing rules for assets people already hold.

  • XRP Ledger’s Batch V1.1 amendment sits at 27 of 35 validators. It needs 28.
  • Tonkeeper, 77 million registered users, is now Keeper and runs on seven chains.
  • The FCA wants to know whether fund rules still fit gold once it moves onchain.
  • Wallet makers selling into the EU have 24 hours to report an exploited bug.

The pattern holds across all four. The machinery for owning assets directly is getting more capable and more openly accountable at the same time, and those two usually arrive years apart.

The XRP Ledger’s Batch V1.1 amendment has 27 of its 35 trusted validators behind it, against the 80% threshold the network requires. One more vote starts a two week countdown to activation.

Batch lets a user bundle up to eight linked transactions into a single operation, where either all of them go through or none of them do. RippleX, Ripple’s developer arm, backs the change and says commercial projects built on Batch are already under contract or in development.

The current version landed after an earlier one was found to carry a flaw that would have let an attacker slip transactions from somebody else’s account into a bundle without approval. Eleven critical issues were fixed in the rewrite.

Zypto take: All or nothing is the property that makes a multi step payment safe to automate. A half completed sequence is the quiet fear of anyone moving value themselves, and closing that gap is worth more than another throughput chart.

XRP is one of the 20 chains in Zypto App, where the multichain wallet shows you the route and the fees before a swap runs rather than after it.

Tonkeeper, the largest self custodial wallet in the TON ecosystem with more than 77 million registered users, has rebranded as Keeper and gone multichain. It now runs on TON, Bitcoin, Ethereum, TRON, BNB Smart Chain, Arbitrum and Base.

The Open Platform has taken operational leadership, with the original co-founders staying on as shareholders. Its gasless transaction layer, Battery, is set to expand to every supported network, with cross-chain swaps and a dApp browser on the roadmap.

“Keeper is the next chapter: taking the simplicity we’re known for beyond TON and into the broader crypto economy,” said The Open Platform founder and CEO Andrew Rogozov.

Zypto take: A wallet with 77 million registrations deciding that one chain is no longer enough says something useful about how people hold assets now. Nobody’s holdings respect network boundaries, so the wallet shouldn’t either.

That’s the assumption Zypto App was built on, across 20 blockchains and 24,000+ crypto assets. Download Zypto App.

The FCA asks whether fund rules still fit tokenized gold

The UK’s Financial Conduct Authority opened a call for input on Monday on a purpose built regime for tokenized gold, which could carve it out of the fund rules it would otherwise fall under.

London clears roughly 70% of global notional gold trading volume, and the regulator is explicit that defending that position is part of the motivation. Its own framing is that putting gold onchain “could make gold easier to transfer and use across digital markets, particularly as wholesale collateral.”

“We’re keen to understand whether existing regulatory frameworks remain the right fit for gold markets,” said the FCA’s Jon Relleen.

Zypto take: Gold is the oldest argument for holding a thing rather than a promise, so a regulator working out how it should move onchain is more interesting than the word “consultation” suggests.

The caveat travels with every tokenized asset. A token backed by a vault is still a claim on whoever runs that vault, which is worth keeping straight as more real world assets land onchain.

Wallet makers selling into the EU get a 24 hour clock

The EU’s Cyber Resilience Act took effect on Friday, and it puts crypto wallet makers on a 24 hour reporting clock for any actively exploited bug or severe vulnerability they discover. A fuller notification follows within 72 hours, and a final report once a fix is available.

It applies to hardware and software wallet manufacturers alongside every other product with digital elements sold into the bloc. Fines run to 15 million euros or 2.5% of worldwide annual turnover, whichever is larger.

The European Commission’s stated purpose is to better protect consumers and businesses from cyber threats.

Zypto take: Disclosure deadlines are unglamorous and they change behavior. When you hold your own keys, what protects you is not that software never has bugs, it’s how quickly you hear about the one that matters.

Protection that doesn’t depend on the phone staying clean helps as well, which is the job the Vault Key Card does by keeping transaction approval on a separate card.

Key Takeaways

  • The upgrades worth watching right now are about certainty rather than speed. A transaction that can’t half complete beats a faster one that can.
  • Multichain is turning into the baseline expectation for a self custody wallet instead of a line on a feature list.
  • Tokenized is not the same as issuer free. Gold in a vault, a share, a dollar token: each one still has somebody standing behind it, and that’s worth knowing before you hold it.
  • Faster vulnerability disclosure is a win for people holding their own keys, because the protection was never that bugs don’t exist.
  • More of this week’s news will come from the layer beneath the app, where the rules for moving your own value get written.
