What is Ocean Protocol?

Ocean Protocol is a decentralized platform for sharing and monetizing data and AI services. It lets data owners publish datasets and make them tradable, while consumers, including AI developers, pay to access them. A feature called compute-to-data allows algorithms to run against a dataset without the raw data ever leaving the owner, which preserves privacy while still enabling analysis and model training. Ocean is built on Ethereum and uses ERC-20 datatokens to gate access to each dataset. The OCEAN token is the protocol's medium of exchange: it is used to buy and sell data access, stake on datasets, and participate in governance. The project launched in 2017 and OCEAN went live in 2019.
