What is Irys?
Irys is a programmable datachain, a Layer-1 blockchain designed to store large volumes of data onchain, let smart contracts use that data directly, and verify that it remains available over time. It pairs low-cost onchain storage with an EVM-compatible execution layer called IrysVM, and supports both term-based and permanent storage with instant retrieval.
IRYS is the network's native token, used to pay for storage and transactions and to support the protocol. Irys positions itself for AI and data-heavy applications, and ran an extended testnet that processed hundreds of millions of data transactions before launching its mainnet in 2025.
As a young Layer-1 that went live recently, Irys is still early in its production history, so expect its ecosystem and tooling to keep evolving.
