News & analysis
What is Stacks?
Stacks is a layer that brings smart contracts and decentralized applications to Bitcoin. Rather than being a separate base chain, it settles activity to Bitcoin, letting apps benefit from Bitcoin's security while running their own logic.
The STX token powers the network, used in its consensus and to enable applications that connect to Bitcoin. This design aims to expand what can be built around Bitcoin without changing the Bitcoin protocol itself.
Its close tie to Bitcoin distinguishes Stacks from general-purpose smart contract chains. You can follow the Stacks price and hold STX in a self-custody wallet.
