What is Steem?
Steem is a blockchain built for decentralized social media and content rewards. It was one of the first networks to let users earn cryptocurrency for posting, commenting, and curating content, and it powers social applications such as the Steemit publishing platform. It uses a Delegated Proof of Stake consensus to keep transactions fast and fee-light, which suits the many small interactions a social network generates.
STEEM is the network's main liquid token and launched in 2016, making it one of the older social-focused blockchains. The system also uses related assets, Steem Power for staked influence and Steem-based Dollars, to handle rewards and governance weight.
As an established but mature project, its activity has shifted over the years, so it is worth checking current usage directly.
