What is Pi Network?
Pi Network is a project that lets people accumulate its PI cryptocurrency through a mobile app, without the specialized hardware or heavy electricity use associated with traditional mining. It was launched in 2019 by a team with roots at Stanford University, led by Nicolas Kokkalis and Chengdiao Fan. To resist fake accounts, the app uses a Security Circle model, where members vouch for other people they know, building a social trust graph that supports the consensus mechanism.
PI runs on Pi Network's own blockchain, which is based on the Stellar Consensus Protocol. The project ran for years in a closed period during which tokens could not leave the app, and many users completed identity verification to migrate their balances. External transfers opened in February 2025, after which PI began trading on several exchanges. The network reports a large user base across many countries, though parts of the ecosystem remain a work in progress.
You can follow the Pi Network price and, where supported, hold PI in a self-custody wallet where the keys belong to you.
