What is Dogecoin?
Dogecoin is a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency that started in December 2013, built by Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer as a lighthearted take on the altcoins appearing at the time. It was forked from the Litecoin codebase, and the Shiba Inu meme on its branding helped it grow a large, friendly community that has since used DOGE for tipping, charitable fundraising, and everyday payments.
The Dogecoin network secures transactions with proof of work using the scrypt algorithm, and blocks are produced about once a minute, which keeps confirmations quick and fees low. Since 2014 it has been merge-mined alongside Litecoin through auxiliary proof of work, so Litecoin miners can help secure both chains with the same effort. DOGE has no fixed supply cap, and a steady block reward of 10,000 DOGE per block adds a predictable amount of new coins each year.
