News & analysis
What is Dog (Bitcoin)?
Dog (Bitcoin), trading as DOG and originally named DOG•GO•TO•THE•MOON, is a meme token issued natively on Bitcoin. It uses the Runes protocol, a fungible-token standard that went live on Bitcoin during the April 2024 halving, and it holds the early identifier Rune number 3. Transactions settle directly on the Bitcoin network.
DOG launched in April 2024 with a fully distributed supply of 100 billion tokens. The entire supply was airdropped to holders of Runestone, an earlier distribution that reached more than 112,000 early Ordinals adopters, with no presale or team allocation. The project describes itself as community-driven and operating without a central team.
As a meme token, DOG has no formal utility beyond being a Bitcoin-native asset, and it is relatively new, so its history is short compared with established cryptocurrencies.
