Can RLUSD Replace XRP?

Can RLUSD replace XRP? An honest, holder-first answer: where RLUSD genuinely competes with XRP, why it structurally can't replace it, and what Ripple isn't saying.

Read article

If you hold XRP and Ripple launching a dollar stablecoin made you uneasy, you’re not being paranoid. It’s a fair question, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a marketing line.

The short version: no, RLUSD can’t replace XRP. But the reason isn’t the tidy “they’re complementary” story Ripple tends to tell. The honest picture has more tension in it, and if you’re a holder you deserve to see all of it.

The Short Answer

RLUSD cannot replace XRP, because on the XRP Ledger, XRP does jobs a stablecoin structurally cannot. But RLUSD does overlap with part of the story XRP was sold on, and that overlap is real. So the accurate answer isn’t “no, relax”. It’s “no, but here’s exactly where RLUSD and XRP compete, and where they don’t.”

Why XRP Holders Are Worried

For years, the case for XRP centred on payments. Ripple built its reputation on moving money across borders, and XRP was pitched as the bridge asset that banks and payment firms would use to shift value between currencies instantly, instead of parking money in accounts around the world.

Then Ripple launched RLUSD, a stablecoin aimed at cross-border payments and settlement. If you bought XRP for the payments thesis, it’s completely reasonable to ask why Ripple just built a second product that targets the same job, and whether your asset still has a role. We looked at Ripple’s own reasoning in why did Ripple create RLUSD.

The Honest Case That RLUSD Competes With XRP

Let’s put the concern at its strongest, because it’s stronger than Ripple’s messaging admits.

A stablecoin holds a fixed value. For a bank moving dollars to euros, an asset that doesn’t swing in price is arguably better for the bridging job than one that does. As one analysis put it, a stablecoin “directly competes with XRP’s original mission as a bridge currency for banks converting currencies.”

There’s also the question of why Ripple built it. Oppenheimer analyst Owen Lau suggested banks had avoided XRP because of “volatility and regulatory overhang.” In other words, RLUSD may exist partly because institutions were hesitant about XRP itself. And critics have warned plainly that if RLUSD gains traction, it could “cannibalize whatever potential XRP demand Ripple has been trying to drum up for years.”

That is the real concern, stated honestly. We’re not going to pretend it away.

Why RLUSD Still Can’t Replace XRP

Here’s the other side, and it’s structural, not spin.

On the XRP Ledger, XRP isn’t optional. Every transaction destroys a tiny amount of XRP as its network fee. Every account must hold a reserve in XRP (currently 1 XRP as a base, plus 0.2 XRP for each item it holds). And to hold RLUSD on the XRP Ledger at all, your account needs a trust line, which itself requires an XRP reserve.

Read that again: using RLUSD on XRPL requires you to own and spend XRP. RLUSD can’t replace the asset it depends on to exist on that ledger.

XRP also still does the one thing a single stablecoin can’t: bridge between many currencies. RLUSD is one dollar token. XRP can sit in the middle of a dollar-to-peso, euro-to-yen, or any-to-any conversion where no direct stablecoin pair exists.

We’ll be straight, though: fee burn and account reserves are small sources of XRP demand compared with the “banks settling trillions” story holders were originally sold. They prove XRP can’t be replaced on XRPL. They don’t, on their own, carry the bigger thesis.

What Ripple Says

Ripple’s position is that the two are complementary. Ripple’s then-CTO David Schwartz argued, “Having multiple paths to give customers a better experience means you have more customers,” framing RLUSD as a way to serve cases where XRP isn’t the right fit rather than a replacement for it.

That’s Ripple’s claim. It’s reasonable as far as it goes. It also, conveniently, doesn’t address the cannibalisation question head-on. You can weigh it for yourself.

So, Complement or Competitor?

Both, honestly.

  • They can’t replace each other structurally: XRP is the native asset that powers the ledger RLUSD runs on.
  • They do different core jobs: XRP bridges between currencies; RLUSD holds a stable value. We break this down in RLUSD vs XRP.
  • But they do compete for part of the payments narrative XRP was sold on, and RLUSD’s stability makes it a genuine rival for some of that work.

“Can RLUSD replace XRP?” No. “Does RLUSD change XRP’s story?” Yes, and any holder who felt that shift was reading it correctly.

Where Zypto Stands

We’re not here to sell you a happy ending on either asset. What we’ll say is this: you don’t have to pick a side to use them. Zypto App lets you hold, buy, manage, send and cross-chain swap both XRP and RLUSD in one self-custodial wallet, with your keys under your control, so you can act on your own read of where this goes rather than ours. Check the live XRP price or RLUSD price any time.

Nothing here is investment advice. It’s an explanation of how the two assets function.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. On the XRP Ledger, XRP pays network fees and account reserves and acts as a bridge between currencies, jobs a stablecoin can't take over. RLUSD and XRP do different things.

In part, yes. Both target cross-border payments, and RLUSD's stable value makes it a real alternative for some settlement work XRP was pitched for. They compete for that narrative even though neither can replace the other.

Ripple says it wants "multiple paths" to serve more customers. Analysts also note banks were wary of XRP's volatility and past regulatory uncertainty, which a stablecoin sidesteps. See why did Ripple create RLUSD for more.

On XRPL, yes, a little. Fees are paid in XRP and holding RLUSD needs an XRP reserve. But it's small next to the large-scale payments demand XRP was originally pitched on.

That's your call and not something we advise on. This guide explains how the two assets function so you can decide for yourself.
