Today in Crypto - Cronos Switches Off Its Own Blockchain

Cronos halts its whole chain after a $75M exploit, Vietnam's crypto fines start September 1, Stellar nears $4B.

Money that people keep using once nobody is forcing them to is the interesting kind. Argentines carried on buying dollar tokens after inflation collapsed, tokenized debt quadrupled on Stellar while its token went the other way, and Cronos showed what it looks like when a network decides nothing moves at all.

  • Validators switched off the entire Cronos chain after an attacker pumped a token 100x and borrowed against it.
  • Vietnam’s penalties land tomorrow, and a licensed exchange there now costs $383 million in charter capital.
  • $868.8 million to nearly $4 billion: tokenized government debt and credit on Stellar, in eight months.
  • Monthly inflation in Argentina fell from 25.5% to 2.1%. The stablecoins stayed.

Each one is a different answer to the same question, which is who decides whether your value moves. Sometimes it’s a validator set, sometimes a capital requirement, sometimes an issuer, and sometimes you.

Cronos switches off its own blockchain

An attacker pushed the price of TONIC, the governance token of Cronos lending app Tectonic, up roughly 100 times in 20 minutes, then borrowed against the inflated collateral. Onchain researcher Weilin Li put the assets affected at around $75 million. Tectonic held about $121.7 million in total value locked going in.

Validators then halted the whole Cronos chain. About $6 million had already reached Ethereum, so the rest is frozen where it sits. Crypto.com’s chief executive said the exchange itself was not compromised. No restart time, recovery plan or compensation framework has been announced.

Zypto take: The exploit hit one lending app. The halt hit every balance on the network, and that’s the part worth remembering: some chains have a pause button and someone with the authority to press it.

Keys held on your own device in Zypto App settle who can move your assets. What the network can do settles whether they move at all.

Vietnam’s crypto penalties start tomorrow

Vietnam’s Decree 284/2026 takes effect on September 1, adding administrative penalties for unlicensed service provision, improper token issuance and anti-money-laundering failures. Unlicensed exchange operators face 180 to 200 million dong. Domestic traders on unlicensed platforms face 30 to 50 million dong, though that clock only starts six months after the first license is issued.

Five applicants have cleared a first assessment, To Tran Hoa of the State Securities Commission told the Vietnam RWA Summit 2026. None were named. A license needs 10 trillion dong, about $383 million, in charter capital, 65% of it from institutional shareholders, plus Level 4 information-system security certification.

Zypto take: $383 million of charter capital is a real answer to who gets to run an exchange in Vietnam. It isn’t an answer to who gets to hold their own keys, and it was never meant to be.

Swaps that execute inside the multichain wallet are between the holder and the chain, and that reads the same on September 1 as it does today.

Stellar’s tokenized asset pile quadruples toward $4 billion

Tokenized real-world assets on Stellar have climbed from $868.8 million at the end of 2025 to nearly $4 billion, a rise of about 360% this year, according to a Dune dashboard maintained by Stellar.

Spiko leads with $1.55 billion, ahead of Realiz at $559 million, Tradable at $548 million, Franklin Templeton at $546 million and Ondo at $535 million. The mix runs US Treasurys, private and public credit, and non-US government debt, including tokenized Mexican CETES and Brazilian government bonds. XLM is down around 11% this year, near $0.18.

Zypto take: The asset side of the network grew fourfold while the token fell 11%, which is a clean reminder that usage and price answer different questions.

Stellar is the network Zypto App uses for USDC cash-in and cash-out, and tokenized real-world assets sit in the same wallet as everything else.

Argentina kept the stablecoins after the emergency passed

a16z crypto put out five charts on Argentina on Sunday. One in five Argentines uses crypto, and 94% of peso crypto trading volume goes into stablecoins, the highest stablecoin share of any major currency that Artemis tracks.

The digital dollar premium over the official rate ran past 100% during the 2023 capital controls. As of August 28 it sits near 4%. Downloads of the Lemon wallet kept rising quarter after quarter even as monthly inflation fell from 25.5% to 2.1%.

Zypto take: Dollar tokens arrived in Argentina as a hedge against inflation that hit 289%, and they still take 94% of peso crypto volume with the premium down to 4%. The emergency passed and the habit stayed.

Stablecoins in Zypto App swap across 20 blockchains and go straight into bill payments, mobile top-ups and gift cards, USDC included. Download Zypto App.

Key Takeaways

  • Ownership has two halves: who may move your assets, and whether the network will move them at all. Cronos answered the second one for everybody at once.
  • A capital requirement decides who may operate a venue. It has never decided who may hold their own keys.
  • Payment networks are quietly winning the tokenized-asset business, and the price of a network’s token is a separate story from the volume settling on it.
  • Argentina is the closest thing to a controlled experiment anyone has on stablecoins. Remove the crisis, and see what people keep using. They kept them.
  • The adoption worth watching from here is the kind that survives good news.
