Today in Crypto - MoneyGram Widens Cash Bridge to Solana, More

MoneyGram's cash network reaches Solana, UK banks face crypto questions, and Coinbase opens an Abu Dhabi tokenization hub.

Money is finding new routes today, not new headlines about price. A cash network adds a chain, a parliament asks banks to justify a closed door, a tokenization hub picks its flag, and Bitcoin gets an easier lane between its own layers.

  • MoneyGram’s crypto-to-cash service now runs on Solana, on top of its existing Stellar rails.
  • UK lawmakers wrote to every major bank CEO demanding answers on crypto account refusals.
  • Coinbase secured regulatory permission to build a tokenized-securities hub in Abu Dhabi.
  • Blockstream shipped a way to move Bitcoin between the base chain and Lightning without running a node.

None of these stories are really about a single asset. They are about who controls the door between a digital balance and something usable, whether that is cash, a bank account, a security, or a payment channel, and today four different doors got a little wider.

MoneyGram’s crypto-to-cash network reaches Solana

MoneyGram put its Ramps service live on Solana on August 1, giving Solana wallets and exchanges a single API connection into its cash agent network instead of building their own banking connections. Rift became the first Solana wallet to integrate it, with cash deposits running across 25-plus countries and withdrawals across more than 170.

CEO Anthony Soohoo called it part of an open global payments network. It builds on MoneyGram’s Stellar-based USDC bridge, live since 2022, and its own MGUSD stablecoin launched on Stellar in June.

Zypto take: MoneyGram is Zypto’s official partner for turning USDC into physical cash with no bank account required, and that bridge already runs on Stellar. Adding Solana to the same network is one more route into the same outcome: a person holding digital dollars somewhere that treats them as spare change until MoneyGram treats them as money.

Zypto App holds Solana alongside Stellar natively, so wherever this cash network expands next, USDC to Cash is already sitting on the chain it needs.

UK lawmakers press banks to explain crypto account refusals

Labour MP Gurinder Singh Josan and Lord Vaizey of Didcot, co-chairs of Parliament’s Crypto and Digital Assets APPG, wrote to the chief executives of every major UK bank this week. The letter asks six direct questions, including whether each bank serves crypto firms, what limits it applies, and whether the incoming FCA regime will change its stance.

The push follows research finding UK banks blocked or delayed roughly 40% of attempted transfers to crypto exchanges. The co-chairs called banking access one of the biggest barriers to growth for the sector.

Zypto take: A crypto business getting refused a bank account is a real problem, and no exchange interface fixes it if the account behind it can be closed without warning. That is exactly why routing around the bank matters on the user side of the same industry.

Paying bills with crypto settles more than 87,000 billers directly from a wallet, no bank account anywhere in the chain, which means the question Parliament is asking banks never has to become a customer’s problem in the first place.

Coinbase opens a tokenization hub in Abu Dhabi

Coinbase received Financial Services Permission from the Abu Dhabi Global Market’s regulator to build an international tokenization hub, arranging investment deals and providing custody for tokenized securities backed by real shares. The operation sits alongside Coinbase’s existing derivatives business in Dubai.

Coinbase Institutional co-CEO Brett Tejpaul said no major financial center has yet built a framework treating tokenized equities as securities, onchain tokens and DeFi-composable assets all at once. Abu Dhabi introduced its virtual-asset framework in 2018 and has drawn tokenization firms looking for a regulated regional base since.

Zypto take: A jurisdiction competing to host tokenized equities is a sign the asset class stopped being an experiment and started being infrastructure people want to own a piece of building. That race is about custody and clarity for institutions, but the underlying idea, a real-world asset represented as a token you actually hold, is already live for individuals.

Zypto’s real-world assets support covers tokenized treasuries and gold today, self-custodied in a multichain wallet rather than parked at a single custodian in a single emirate.

Blockstream lets Bitcoin move between chain and Lightning without a node

Blockstream launched Blockstream Swaps, a non-custodial way to move funds between the Bitcoin base chain and the Lightning Network. Users hold a Bitcoin or LBTC balance and the conversion happens automatically at payment time, with no Lightning node or channel management required.

The launch follows Boltz suspending its own swap service after attackers exploited it faster than the team could patch it. Blockstream said the new feature complements existing swap providers rather than replacing them.

Zypto take: Running a Lightning node has always been the real barrier standing between wanting to use Bitcoin for payments and actually doing it, and most people never clear it. Removing that requirement while keeping the funds in the user’s control is the correct trade, security intact, complexity gone.

Zypto App takes the same position on Bitcoin generally: self custody across 20-plus blockchains without asking anyone to also become their own infrastructure operator.

Key Takeaways

  • Cash access, bank accounts, custody licenses and payment channels are all the same category of problem: who controls the door, and today four separate doors opened a little wider.
  • MoneyGram widening its network to Solana matters less for the chain itself than for how many more people end up standing near a cash counter that will take their stablecoins.
  • A jurisdiction actively competing for tokenized securities business is the strongest signal yet that real-world assets on a blockchain have moved past the pilot stage.
  • The recurring fix across today’s stories is the same one Zypto builds around by default: put the routing on the user’s side of the wall, not on the side that needs someone else’s permission.
  • None of this required anyone to wait for banks to decide crypto was acceptable. It just required someone to build a shorter path.
