Look up a coin like USDT and you will see it on Ethereum, on BNB Chain, on Tron, and more. Is that the same money in different places, or different coins that share a name? Here is what is really going on, and the one safety rule that comes with it.
One Token, Many Networks
A token like USDT is issued by a single company, but that company puts a version of it on several blockchains so people can use it wherever they already are. Think of a familiar shop with branches in different cities: same brand, same company, but each branch is its own place. The USDT on Ethereum and the USDT on Tron are the same asset in the way that matters (both are Tether dollars, backed the same way), but each lives on its own separate network.
The Rule That Saves You: Match the Network
Here is the part that trips people up and can cost them money. Those versions are not automatically interchangeable. USDT on Ethereum sits at an Ethereum address; USDT on Tron sits at a Tron address. If you send Ethereum USDT to someone expecting it on Tron, or to an exchange deposit address for the wrong network, it can be lost.
So the golden rule when sending any token is simple: the network you send on, meaning which blockchain it travels over, must match the network the receiver expects. (As before, “network” and “blockchain” mean the same thing.) Always check the network, not only the coin.
In practice this comes up in a normal payment conversation. It sounds like this:
"I'll send you $100. Which currency and which blockchain do you prefer?"
"Does USDC on Ethereum work for you?"
"Perfect. Send me your Ethereum wallet address and I'll zip it over."
Notice what gets agreed up front: which token, and which network. That is exactly the habit to build.
Moving a Token Between Chains
So what if your USDT is on one chain but you need it on another? You do not send it directly. You move it across using a cross-chain swap or a bridge, which hands over the token on one network and gives you the matching token on the other. Which Chain Should You Choose?

- Match the destination. Paying a person or an exchange? Use the network they support. This matters more than anything else.
- Mind the fees. The same transfer can cost very different amounts on different chains, so a cheaper network is often better for everyday amounts (see gas fees).
- Keep the native token for gas. Whichever chain you use, hold a little of its native coin to cover the fee.
There is rarely a single “right” chain. The best one is whatever reaches your destination cheaply.
