What is Sonic?
Sonic is an EVM-compatible Layer 1 blockchain built for fast, low-cost transactions, with sub-second confirmation times and very low fees. Because it runs the Ethereum Virtual Machine, applications written for other EVM chains can be deployed on Sonic with little or no change to their code. A native gateway connects Sonic to Ethereum for moving assets between the two networks.
Sonic is the successor to Fantom Opera. The S token launched on December 18, 2024, and FTM holders could upgrade their tokens to S on a one-to-one basis through the official portal. S is the native token of the network: it pays transaction fees, can be staked to help secure the chain and earn rewards, is required to run a validator, and is used in on-chain governance.
The Sonic network is young in its current form, having relaunched at the end of 2024, though it builds on years of work under the Fantom name. You can track the Sonic price and store S yourself in a self-custody wallet.
