What is Polygon?
POL is the native token of Polygon, a set of Ethereum scaling networks. It is the successor to MATIC, the token that powered the project when its main proof-of-stake chain went live in 2020. In September 2024 the network migrated MATIC to POL at a one-to-one ratio, and since then every transaction on Polygon PoS has used POL as its gas token.
POL has two core jobs. It pays the gas fees for activity on the network, and it is staked by validators who secure the chain and earn rewards for doing so. Polygon PoS is widely used as a low-cost settlement layer for payments and decentralized applications, and the project's AggLayer is designed to connect liquidity across multiple chains.
