What is Kusama?
Kusama is an experimental blockchain network that serves as a fast-moving testing ground for the technology behind Polkadot. Often described as a canary network, it is where new features for governance, staking, and parachains are trialed under real economic conditions before they reach the more conservative Polkadot network. It shares much of the same codebase but moves more quickly and with fewer guardrails.
Kusama launched in 2019 and was conceived by Polkadot founder Gavin Wood. Its KSM token is used to secure the network through proof-of-stake staking, to participate in on-chain governance, and to back projects bidding for parachain slots through crowdloans and auctions.
Because it is designed for experimentation, Kusama can be more volatile and unpredictable than its sibling. You can follow the Kusama price and hold KSM in a self-custody wallet.
