Ethereum Classic is the continuation of the original Ethereum blockchain that launched in 2015. It came about after the community split following a major hack, with one group choosing to keep the unaltered chain rather than reverse the affected transactions. That chain became Ethereum Classic.
The ETC coin powers the network and is secured through proof-of-work mining, distinguishing it from the proof-of-stake model the main Ethereum chain later adopted. It supports smart contracts and follows a philosophy centered on immutability, the idea that the ledger should not be changed.
