What is Polkadot?
Polkadot is a network designed to let many independent blockchains work together under one shared security layer. Its mainnet launched in 2020, founded by Gavin Wood, a co-founder of Ethereum. At the center sits the relay chain, which coordinates the network and provides security to the specialized chains that connect to it.
The relay chain uses a variant of proof of stake known as nominated proof of stake. Validators produce blocks and finalize the chain, while holders nominate validators they trust and back them with staked DOT. The connected chains, originally called parachains, plug into the relay chain to share its validator set instead of bootstrapping their own. Access to that shared processing is now bought as coretime.
DOT is the native token of Polkadot. It is used for staking to secure the network, for on-chain governance voting, and to acquire the coretime that powers connected chains. You can check the Polkadot price and store DOT yourself in a self-custody wallet.
