What is Astar?

Astar is a layer-1 blockchain that runs as a parachain on Polkadot, drawing on Polkadot's shared security and connections to other networks. It supports both Ethereum-style EVM smart contracts and WebAssembly contracts, so developers can build using more than one programming environment on the same chain.

The ASTR token is the network's native asset. Astar started under the name Plasm and opened its mainnet in 2022. ASTR pays for gas, is used for staking and governance, and powers a dApp staking model where holders can stake toward projects on the network and earn rewards while supporting developers.

Astar grew into one of the more active parachains in the Polkadot ecosystem. You can follow the Astar price and hold ASTR in a self-custody wallet.
