What is Degen?

Degen (DEGEN) is a token that started in the Farcaster social ecosystem and grew into one of the better known community tokens on Base, Coinbase's Ethereum Layer 2. It launched in January 2024, beginning with an airdrop to members of the Degen channel on Farcaster, and is structured as an ERC-20 token on Base. DEGEN began life as a tipping and rewards token, used to reward content and contributors inside the Farcaster community. It later took on a second role as the native gas token of Degen Chain, a Layer 3 network built on top of Base, which gives the token a function beyond social tipping. Degen sits in the community and meme token category, so its value is driven mainly by community activity and sentiment rather than by an underlying business or cash flow.
