What is Linea?

Linea is an Ethereum layer-2 network built by Consensys, the company behind MetaMask. It is a zkEVM rollup, meaning it processes transactions off the Ethereum main chain and uses zero-knowledge proofs to settle them back to Ethereum, aiming for lower fees while staying compatible with existing Ethereum tooling and contracts. The mainnet opened to users in 2023. The LINEA token launched later, in September 2025, through one of the larger layer-2 airdrops to date. Notably, the project allocated no tokens to venture investors, the team, or advisors, directing the bulk toward an ecosystem fund and early users. Gas on Linea is paid in ETH, and the network runs a dual-burn model that burns a portion of fees in both ETH and LINEA.
