Tezos is a smart contract platform launched in 2018, known for its on-chain governance and emphasis on code security. Its design lets the protocol upgrade itself through stakeholder votes without splitting the network, a feature meant to avoid contentious forks.

The XTZ token is used for staking and governance through a liquid proof-of-stake model, where holders can participate directly or by delegating. Tezos was built with formal verification in mind, making it suited to applications that demand high assurance.
