Stronghold is a payments company, and SHX is the token tied to its network. The business builds payment products such as ACH transfers, card processing, real-time payments, and merchant financing, and SHX is the asset that connects user activity to that ecosystem. It is not a general-purpose smart-contract platform; its value is meant to come from use inside Stronghold's payment rails.

SHX is native to the Stellar network, which uses the Stellar Consensus Protocol, and an ERC-20 version also exists on Ethereum via a third-party bridge. The token is used for rewards earned by merchants and customers on transaction volume, for liquidity that backs Stronghold's lending product, and for governance votes weighted by holdings. An early airdrop of roughly 5% of supply went out to users at the end of 2018.
