Algorand is a layer-1 blockchain founded in 2017 by Silvio Micali, an MIT computer scientist and Turing Award winner, with its mainnet going live in June 2019. It was designed to handle decentralization, security, and scale together, and supports use cases such as tokenization, payments, decentralized finance, and digital identity. Development is led by Algorand, Inc., while the Algorand Foundation supports the ecosystem and coordinates community governance.

該 network runs on Pure Proof-of-Stake, a consensus model that selects block proposers and validators at random from token holders who have staked. The barrier to take part is low, which is intended to keep participation broad and the network decentralized. Transactions settle with fast finality at very low cost.
