Hive Dollar (HBD) is the native stablecoin of the Hive blockchain, designed to hold a value close to one US dollar. Rather than being backed by off-chain reserves, it works through an on-chain conversion mechanism: holders can convert HBD into an equivalent dollar value of HIVE, the network's main token, using a price feed maintained by Hive's elected block producers. A waiting period on conversions helps limit abuse during volatile markets.

HBD is unusual among stablecoins because the protocol can pay native interest on HBD held in savings, at a rate set by Hive's governance. Hive is a delegated proof-of-stake blockchain that launched in 2020 as a fork of the Steem chain, and HBD carries over the design used there.
