Ergo mines blocks with Autolykos, a memory-hard proof-of-work algorithm designed to resist ASICs and stay GPU-friendly, so mining power stays more accessible than on ASIC-dominated chains. Rather than Bitcoin’s simple UTXO model, Ergo uses an extended UTXO (eUTXO) design: each unspent output can carry arbitrary data and a script, so a single coin can encode conditions for how and when it can be spent, enabling smart contracts without an account-based model like Ethereum’s. The network launched on Autolykos v1 and moved to the current Autolykos v2 via "The Hardening" hard fork in February 2021, which removed a non-outsourceable-puzzle constraint so mining could be pooled.

Autolykos mining
Autolykos is a memory-hard Proof-of-Work algorithm intended to resist specialized ASIC hardware, keeping mining more accessible to ordinary GPUs.
Storage rent
Long-unused coins are subject to a small periodic storage rent, a mechanism designed to keep miners economically incentivized once block rewards taper off, rather than relying on transaction fees alone.
Capped, no-premine supply
Ergo launched with no ICO and no pre-allocation for its founders, and its supply is hard-capped at roughly 97.7 million ERG.
